The Bulu is one of several related ethnic groups living in the forested south–central region of Cameroon, mainland Equatorial Guinea, and northern Gabon. Together, these peoples are called the Fang. The term Bulu refers to a major subgroup within the Fang, and Fong is one of the tribes associated with the Bulu.
The mask shown in the picture belongs to the rites of the Ngui(Ngi, Ngil) Secret Society, also known as the Gorilla Society, which was active in southern Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.
Ngui(Ngi, Ngil), the cult of purifying fire, is symbolized by a gorilla, revered as a sacred animal and fire deity. Members wore ceremonial gorilla masks; while only the Bulu Fong masks contain real skulls, other groups used stylized wooden masks, such as the well–known white Ngil mask of the Fang: RAND AFRICAN ART or CHRISTIE'S.
